New Haven Advocate: Should Cheerleading Be Considered a Sport?

The New Haven Advocate published Should Cheerleading Be Considered a Sport?.

Quinnipiac needed to cut something from its budget. Out went women’s volleyball and in came competitive cheerleading. But to stay within bounds of Title IX, the federal law requiring it to provide equal opportunity to men and women, the university had to make the case that cheerleading was a sport. Just one problem: Cheerleading isn’t recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the NCAA as such. Make that two problems: There are so few established programs for cheerleading that Quinnipiac’s team competed against non-varsity and high school teams.
