Between now and early May I’ll make a trip to California in between 2 trips to Florida, technically 3 since I’ll have a layover in Atlanta during a flight from one part of Florida to another. It should be fun, will be tiring, and will give me a chance to see some of the best cheerleading teams around. Once these trips are done I should be done traveling or a while, which is something I’m also looking forward to. Until then I’ll just enjoy the ride and try to keep track of which time zone I’m in.

Enjoy the Time You Have With Each Other
Last week at about this time I was leaving UCA All*Star Nationals. This trip to UCA was a little different because instead of being on the judges stand I was in warm ups looking for rules violations. Our goal was to catch violations in warm ups so we could inform the coaches and let them make changes before they got to the main floor. Let’s just say coaches had mixed reactions to us. A few said “Thank You” and a few did not. Some coaches asked me to repeat what I said so the kids could hear, I assume because they had told the squad the same thing several times and thought they may listen if it came from someone else.
Others looked at me like I had the sign of the anti-Christ engraved in my forehead. This made me think about the example some coaches set for their staff and teams. I know how important this is to people and that it is their means of paying the bills and putting food on the table, but there is no reason for some people to act the way they do at events. Coaches need to remember they have been given the privilege of doing something they love for a living and given the opportunity to be a great example for kids. I think some of them forget this at times, but hopefully they’ll return to their senses sooner rather than later. Overall it was surprisingly enjoyable and something I’m sure I’ll do again soon.
Shortly after returning I left again to visit Marcel and his wife and meet his adorable baby girl. His wife made some homemade chicken curry that was incredible. His little girl was a giggling ball of fun and huge Dora fan. Marcel and I got a chance to work on Aneris and talked about some ideas for the future.
After that I judged a competition. It was interesting and gave a few people a new perspective on the things that go on “behind the scenes” at an event. We had upset coaches and parents cussing at the event director by the time the first team walked off the floor. After what started out as a circus of a day we ended up with few complaints about scoring or placement, aka the things people go to competitions for.
During the competition I think I had some spicy crab dip. A few of you will understand the relevance of this statement.
After the competition we went to Brio, which is one of my favorite Italian restaurants (Thanks Will), for dinner and to wind down. Most people had early flights so we didn’t stay out too late or do anything silly.
When I got picked up from the airport Miggy told me we were heading to one of the girls house for a viewing because her mom died unexpectedly the night before. Now an 8th grade girl with a love of cheerleading and roller skating is without a mom. I don’t know a whole lot about trying to help a girl that lost her mom at a young age so I really don’t know where I’m going with this. I will leave you with advice from the husband that lost his wife:
Enjoy the time you have with each other because I would give anything to hold her one more time.
Congratulations UCA National Champions
Congratulations to Dunbar, Graves County, Greenup County, Westview, for winning UCA High School Nationals once again. Congratulations to Saleem & Donna with Dunbar, Mark with Graves County, Candy with Greenup County, and Craig Monte with Westview (and all the guys and girls on the teams).
Congratulations are also in order for so many of my friends (Crabtree, Jomo, Keogh, Ryan McGovern, Trey Griffin, and I’m sure I’m not thinking of some others) and their teams for successful trips to Orlando.
Hide & Seek
What is good for the industry? Many people have ideas, but no one really knows the answer. Maybe a better question is what is bad for the industry. I would like to think most of us would agree on the items that would make this list, but that’s not reality. I’m not even sure Andre on Monday agrees with Andre on Tuesday all the time, why should I expect others to agree with me or each other consistently. One of the things that has consistently stayed on the good side is transparency.
Sunday night in Destin I received an email alleging wrong doing by a prominent group in our industry. The email had all sorts of details attempting to support the claimed wrong doing, none of which I could say with certainty were true or false. Personally I don’t think anything “illegal” was done, but things were done that wouldn’t be “legal” in a perfect world. It was in what many of us would refer to as the “Grey” area. I put “illegal” and “legal” in quotes because I’m referring to industry rules, not laws punishable with jail time. I’m not saying this to imply what was done shouldn’t have been done, in fact it’s probably the smartest thing that could be done. If the rules permit something to be done don’t you owe it to your group to do it if it helps your group? If it were a pyramid or tumbling trick we’d likely give credit for being creative, but other areas lead to someone’s moral compass being questioned.
After getting the email and getting back to a place conducive to work I forwarded the email to the person accused of wrong doing. This was late Tuesday night and I planned on giving her a call the next day. Instead she called me about 30 minutes after sending the email. We talked about the details and she explained what was going on, including many details I was asked not to share. I told her that I would be posting something about the issue on Spirit Post later that week and let her know if she sent a response I would include it. She said she would send me something, but wanted to be sure the official people received her response first. She later let me know she wouldn’t be able to send me her response, which I interpreted as legal action would be taken soon and she didn’t want to do anything that would put that in jeopardy. I was later sent her response, without asking for it, from another person.
I’m not certain of the order of the next few events, but it doesn’t really matter, and they all took place by Thursday evening. Among the events were more emails from the accuser with additional support for the claims and a response to the accused being cleared by the governing body. Let me repeat that, the accuser was sent a letter to let them know the accused was investigated and cleared of the allegations. At this point I decided there was enough info to put something on Spirit Post on Friday. I wrote a 3 sentence post. The first sentence said allegations were made, the second said the allegations were investigated and the accused was cleared, and the third mentioned a different allegation involving an event producer.
Within about 30 minutes of publishing the post I received a text from the same higher up at Varsity All Star that emailed me after the April Fools Day joke telling me I need to be responsible and a phone call from the accused implying slander or defamation of character. There seemed to be a great urgency to make sure no one knew allegations were made, even though they we found to be invalid, for no apparent reason. This doesn’t fall into the transparent category.
Showtime Spirit & Premier Athletics
Showtime Spirit will combine with Premier Athletics in January 2010, merging the Lexington gyms Kentucky Elite & Showtime Spirit. The combination won’t lead to major changes this season, but by the time next season begins the gyms will be operating as one. This season the All Star teams will continue as originally planned, competing under Kentucky Elite and Showtime Spirit at separate events, and the school teams will continue with business as usual. There may be some adjustments with classes in an attempt to utilize the strengths of the combine staff and make classes more convenient for students.
There isn’t much to say about next season yet, but information will be made available as details are finalized.
